Work Experience: More! Magazine

In February 2011 I got chosen out of hundreds of people to write an online mini-blog for my favourite magazine, More! Magazine. This was such an amazing honour for me as I admire their work so much and love articles which they feature in the magazine. Writing for them is a dream come true and the response I have had from my first few blogs have been amazing.

This is a wonderful writing experience, it is helping me gain more skills and improve on my skills I already have. I work to strict deadline and have to get my topics approved just days before my blog goes online.

9 other girls blog and we are all enjoying this experience and I am sure they all, like me, are hoping that this experience helps us further ourselves as we look to the future.

E4 Campaign

Below are 2 images from a campaign me and some classmates did for E4's Monday Movie Night. The first image shows a storyboard of a television advert where it shows an interrogation of a movie buff who is butch but secretly loves films like Dirty Dancing.

This second image shows 2 print adverts we made for the campaign. They follow the theme of the interrogation. Guilty pleasures was our theme.

Sound effects.

I did Media Film and TV in College. We were creating a film which required a slap so this was a tester video to see how the slap with the sound effect would go down.

Title Sequence

In Uni we had to make a title sequence for a book we had read that wasn't popular or already a film. I chose to do a title sequence about a book called "Singing It" which is about a girl called Flower who is obsessed with old jazz and Peggy Lee.

Inspirations

As an Advertising student I have to have some inspirations in my work. These don't have to particularly have to be images, they can be text, music and even objects found around the household.

One of my big inspirations for my work is Lady Gaga. Not just her videos, her image but her personality too. I believe big personality should be put into all my work so that it oozes virbrancy and originality.

I am a magazine horder, I love my magazines especially More! Magazine, who I am currently a mini-blogger for. I look in magazines and look at their features and photoshoots and look at how they are arrange and this inspires me with how high quality a image can look with few special touches. Here we have More!'s Wow Buy of the Week, I love how beautifully the Bra and Knickers have been captured. The red silk underneath simple as it is reflects the subtle red bows on the underwear which works extremely well in capturing a beautiful eye catching image.

Pictures also inspire me. I love capturing one off perfect camera moments. I also love old pictures and pictures with a special flair to them. Andy Warhol has been mentioned before on this blog I love his work and also Banksy, in my hometown Liverpool there has been protests about protecting a piece of Banksy's work. This is it, The White Cat. It is a beautiful piece of work which many of Banksy's followers admire.

Pop art is what made me want to go into something creative. I love the colour the shapes and the imagination that goes into pop art. I love this image from the brand Coca-cola:

Well thats all the inspirations I have for now will add more as I remember them or even new ones I come across.

This is Me!

My name is Kate Hurn, I’m 19 years old. I am currently studying Advertising in Edge Hill University.

I have decided that to impress me and inspire me something has to be really interesting. I have found since starting the course that I have to have more of an open mind towards things. Some of my current inspirations are Andy Warhol for his use of colour and uniqueness, Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody for their amazing work on Juno, which I believe to be one of the best films of the 21st Century. Alfred Hitchcock for being one of the most eerie thriller film directors, the tension he creates is like no other.  Kelly Clarkson for having an amazing voice and inspirational lyrics.

Musicals play a big part of my life as I have been singing, dancing and acting from a very young age. My favourite musical is Hairspray, this is because not only does it have many fantastic musical numbers but also a good story behind it. I also enjoy Mamma Mia, Fame and Blood Brothers.

Media has been a big part of my life since I have been 16. The amount of creativity that goes behind creating a piece of media is phenomenal. In college I made a few short films and documentaries. I also did an advert and the process of this made me intrigued in the course I am on.

My father has been in freight work since he was 16 and uses ships and boats to help transfer cargo from Liverpool to other cities and countries. He used to take me to watch the boats leave the docks. He also took me to the Maritime museum to teach me about famous ships which have departed from Liverpool.

History of Liverpool really interests and inspires me because of how much history the city has. It is currently 802 years old, and was capital culture last year in 2008. It is well known for its large docks but also the culture round the city I think inspires everyone who comes from there.
